The power of movement: how the Dynamic School Day works in Hilversum primary schools

More focus in the classroom, less chaos on the playground, and most importantly: happy, energetic children. That’s exactly what we achieve with the Dynamic School Day, a movement program that Bink implements together with primary schools and the municipality of Hilversum.

Our community sports coaches are active weekly at primary schools where children can use a little extra support. They provide movement throughout the school day: from energetic games in the classroom to after-school sports in the gym. This way, physical activity becomes a natural and enjoyable part of the day.

You can just see it in them, says community sports coach Danny. They really come alive. And sometimes it’s something very simple, like a tagging game where, after being tagged, they solve a math problem. But it works. They laugh, participate, learn, and move all at the same time.

Movement Helps on All Fronts

We’ve known it for a long time: movement has an impact. Children who are physically active regularly can concentrate better, feel more confident, and simply feel better. The Dynamic School Day program is completely designed around this.

We run the program at various primary schools in Hilversum, including Violenschool, Kindercampus, Nassauschool, Lelieschool, Sterrenschool, Bloemrijk, and Titus Brandsmaschool, in collaboration with the municipality, which supports and has extended the initiative.

What We Do During a Dynamic School Day

Every school and class is different. That’s why we assess each location to see what works and where there is room for movement. Our community sports coaches offer, among other activities:

Energizers in the Classroom

Short, playful movement breaks between lessons. Clear the mind, get the body moving, and then continue with renewed energy.

Move Mates on the Playground

Older students (grades 7/8) are trained to become game leaders. This boosts their self-confidence and improves the atmosphere on the playground.

Learning and Automating Through Movement

Language and math skills are taught by combining them with simple movements, for example, practicing multiplication tables while jumping.

After-School Sports in the Gym

Enjoy being active after school with peers from the neighborhood. A low-threshold, fun way to end the day actively.

Kindergarten Gym

Preschoolers receive additional movement lessons during school hours.

What It Delivers

Children benefit from it, both physically and emotionally. Teachers notice more calm in the classroom, parents see their child thriving, and the children themselves? They ask when the community sports coach will come again.

  • More focus during lessons
  • Fewer conflicts on the playground
  • Increased self-confidence and enjoyment
  • Better group dynamics

“Sports and physical activity are an important way to enhance children’s well-being and engagement at school,” says Kristel van Ekelenburg, Manager of Sports & Physical Activity at Bink. “Research shows that movement has a positive effect on brain activity. Children can concentrate better and have more energy during lessons. We are very happy to continue the Dynamic School Day program. We can see how much joy it brings the students and how incredibly effective it is.”
